RIAS is the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Investigation Centre of the Ria Formosa and it is located in Olhão, in the Algarve.

RIAS has as its main objectives the rehabilitation of injured and debilitated wildlife, the investigation of the risk factors for their conservation, and the environmental education of the general public to the importance of biodiversity.

What to do if you find an injured wild animal?

1 - Avoid stress and any noise. Handling and contact with people should be kept to a minimum.

2 – Lay a towel over the animal’s head during the capturing procedure. This method will reduce animal visual contact and stress. Place the animal inside an appropriate size cardboard box (with small breathing holes previously made). Pay special attention to the animal’s muzzle/beak/talons/claws to avoid injuries.

3 - Immediately call one of the following services:

4 - Don't keep the animal in your possession any longer than strictly necessary and don't try to heal or feed the animal. This can be detrimental to rehabilitation process.

Volunteer Work at RIAS

RIAS work is only possible with the help of interns and volunteers.

Everybody is welcome as a volunteer as long as they are hardworking, positive and committed to making a difference. You don´t need to have any special knowledge or background to work with RIAS.

Volunteering includes the following tasks: feeding the animals, helping in the maintenance and cleaning of the center, fence building, helping in the activities of environmental education and helping to organize workshops or activities.

Materials we need

For the daily work in the centre we need:
- cleanning products (detergent, bleach, trash bags, mops...)
- medicines (alcohol, antibiotics, creams...)
- animal food (dog and cat food)
- old journals and towels
- electrodomesctics (deskotps, washing machine, camera)
